Tyne RC hit the headlines

January 3rd 2000
Item contributed by Ken Hastie, of North-Eastern Rowing News in the UK.
Tyne RC featured in the BBC television news today when their eight
got into difficulties just beside the Copthorne Hotel in the centre
of Newcastle-upon-Tyne shortly after lunch time. Rescue services
were called out and they pulled the nine rowers from the icy waters
of the Tyne.
The news item featured dramatic footage from the rescue
helicopter showing the bedraggled rowers being hauled to safety,
beside their stricken craft. No mention was made of how the Crew got
into difficulties, but initial reports by the news team that it was a
Tynemouth RC crew proved to be incorrect.
One of the crew members was reported to be still in hospital
suffering from hypothermia.
